CANTON SWEEPS PAST ATHENS

ATHENS — Canton fought off Athens in the first set on its way to a sweep here Tuesday night in NTL volleyball action.

The Lady Warriors, now 2-0, won by scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-10.

“The girls came out really fired up and fought hard in the beginning of the first set,” said Athens coach Heather Hanson. “We could not handle Cantons aggressive serving or relentless defense tonight.

Canton has always been a team that is relentless and will not let you score without a major battle,” she noted. “You have to earn points against them.

“The season has just started,” added Hanson. “It’s great to play an amazing team right away to have that reality check of what we need to do to get the ‘W’.”

Jennie Ryan led Athens with three kills, 10 setter assists, five digs, and one block, while Taylor Walker had two points, two kills, two digs, and one block, Kassie Babcock had four kills and two digs, Ally Martin had two kills and five digs, and Ella Coyle, Braelynn Wood, and Audrey Clare each recorded six digs.

Aislyn Williams led Canton with six aces, three kills, three digs, and 16 assists, while Rachel Martin had five kills and three digs, Jillaney Hartford had five aces, three kills, and five digs, and Trisha Gilbert added four kills, and six digs.

Athens, now 0-2, return to action Friday at Cowanesque Valley.
