ATHENS — Senior Karter Rude helped Athens manufacture both of its runs, and juniors Lucas Kraft and Cameron Sullivan combined on a strong pitching performance to lead the Wildcats to a season-opening, 2-1, win over Cowanesque Valley here Friday afternoon.

HERSHEY — Athens senior Gavin Bradley has tasted defeat on PIAA’s biggest stage, and he didn’t want to feel that way again. His takedown late in the third period lifted him to PIAA gold in the 113-pound bracket here Saturday afternoon in the Class AA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center.

SCRANTON — Senior J.J. Babcock made big play after big play, senior Ryan Thompson canned a clutch 3-pointer, and senior Tucker Brown scored the game-winning points for the second time in three postseason games as Athens fended off a strong second-half effort by Mid-Valley to pull out a 42-40 win in the opening round of the PIAA Class 4A boys basketball playoffs here Tuesday night at Lackawanna College.
